Sea Invaders: {1} Caulerpa Taxifolia's invasion - full story up to AUG 2009)

Climate change combined with the continous transport of tropic DNAs' spores to cooler climates, causes the "Marine Invasion" phenomenon. The spores are curried and released through the big ships' "balast water", in huge quantities. The sea surface temperature rises faster than the rest of the planet. Therefore, some of the 700 DNAs curried from tropical seas and released to the Mediterranean sea, make it to survive in the new areas and grow continously against all the native organisms. Caulerpa forms huge green forests whitch cause all other kinds of life to completely distinguish. Fish in the invaded areas diminish by 90%. This is a big threat for all countries' economies, because fish production is actually the base of every economy. As you can see in the video, France, Spain and Italy face serius consequences.

It is not true that a serius invasion can start from an aquarium, accidental release. A continous transportation and release of huge quantities is needed in order to actually have an invasion. This is what Ballast Water exactly does.

It is a silent war that has started between the Earth's species, that noone ever could expect that it would happen.. As Climate change does on, wrong human actions and the inability of the governments to force big ship owners to apply the International Ballast Water Convention, are now causing the most serious Ecologic threat of the decade: The War between the species!!! The invasion of Caulerpa Taxifolia keeps taking over the Mediterranean coasts. It is only a matter of time till it will completely destroy, more and more Marine Eco-Systems of the Mediterranean Sea. The number of fish in some areas, has already diminished dramatically. They go away from the invaded areas, because they do not find any food. The economy of the European and North African countries is also going to be affected seriusly very soon, as the fish diminish by 90% and if the invaded area is big, they disappear completely (!!!).

There are Sea, river and also lake invasions. The cause is the same in all cases. This video is made by EcoCorfu, ecologic organisations of Northwest Greece, found in Corfu island. We are members of the Eoutheast Eurpoean Network of NGOs that work on the subject together with expetriese on marine ecology from the Univercity of MArine Ecology of Dubrovnic.
